Q: Ipad air disabled, itunes does not see it

I have an Ipad air. it has been disables to the point where it needs to be sync'd with ITunes and totally flushed as it was never backed up or connected with ITunes before. I start ITunes and and put the ipad air in to the mode that displays ITunes logo and the USB cable plugging into it but ITunes never responds. The computer picks it up and ask what I would like to do with the connected ipad but ITunes never recognizes that I have a connected ipad? How can I get this ipad air reset????
