Messages freeze when adding photos

when I am trying to send a message to a friend, and I try to directly send a photo or add a comment to it, I click the photo, the little pop-up goes away and it doesn't load the picture. At this point the screen is frozen, like it's trying to add the picture, but after it unfreezes, the picture isn't there.

Is there a fix for this?
