Q: freeze

OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 iMac Late 2013 2.7 GHz Intel Core I5 - 8 GM 1600MHz DDR3.

Graphics Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB.

Today my iMac started to freeze whilst I was on Safari - sometimes up to 1 min every 4 mins or so.

I then noticed that I was unable to drag icons on the desktop.

I have done a reboot in 'safe mode'.  Whilst in 'safe mode' all operations seemed to be working fine.

I then rebooted in normal mode and although all worked for about 5 mins it then started to freeze again and the dragging of icons on desktop stopped functioning.

The freezing also occurs whilst running internet applications.

Thanks

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Are you running any anti-virus, internet security, or so-called "cleaning/optimizing/tune-up" utilitites? All three WILL affect performance and stability.

Hi, I have had Norton AntiVirus installed for about 3 years now. This is 1st time the PC has frozen.

So I have uninstalled Norton - problem still same.

It only seems to happen when I open either Safari or Chrome.

    Hello,

I can suggest two things. The first would be to download and install Malwarebytes, its a program that looks for malware from your computer. It was suggested to me by apple and works great. Heres the link: Malwarebytes for mac

If that doesn't work, try and run the repair utility. To do so, follow these steps:

    1. Restart your Mac, when you hear the startup sound, hold down Command + R
    2. Release the keys when you see the apple logo
    3. A dialogue will appear, select Disk Utility
    4. Select your drive normally called Macintosh HD and select Repair Disk.

This should scan your disk for errors and fix them on the go. For more information on this, click this link: Repair El Capitan

    Hi, quick update:

I ran the malwarebytes for mac software - this did locate a genieo malware which it removed.  However after reboot the iMac still freezes when on internet.

I also did the suggested Disk Utility Repair Disk on Macintosh HD.  Again after reboot the problem of freezing still occurs.
