Q: Timecapsule Must Create a New Backup... again

Since updating to Yosemite I have been completely unable to back up anything to my Airport Time Capsule. Everytime I restart the process, it takes several days to do a backup and then it says there's a problem with the backup and that I need to start over. So I've been working without a backup for months now.

What to do?

Unfortunately, Time Machine has detected that your old backups are corrupted, and Disk Utility cannot repair them, so Time Machine must erase your old backups and start over again with a new backup and then move forward again.

If you choose to Back Up Later, then backups will not occur until you click the Start New Backup button.

When you click the Start New Backup button, your old corrupted backups will be erased and Time Machine will start a new complete backup of your Mac.

Thank you, but I've done this about 4 times. It takes between 3 days and a week to make a new backup and then the very next time it tries I get the same error again.

    What model is your TC?

They do become unreliable after 3years.. sometimes a long time before that.

It also sounds like you have a wireless issue.

For the first backup plug the computer into the TC with ethernet and turn off wireless.. a computer without ethernet is like a computer without a keyboard... buy the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter.

To help further we also need to understand your whole network setup..

And we need to do some wireless diagnostics.. apple have a utility.. it will be well worth running it.

Thanks, this looks like a promising avenue to explore. I don't have the thunderbolt adapter but I do have an older computer with one and will try it out on there. (neither computer is backing up)

The Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter is very cheap.. cf all the other thunderbolt stuff which is uber expensive.

Let me encourage you.. order one NOW .. Do it.. Do it NOW.. (in Arnie voice).

So, not cheap. That adapter is 37$ at the Apple Store. Bought it anyway. Now it's hooked into my laptop, meaning it's not on the wifi and it's not showing up. Seen as missing in the Airport Utility.

    The wireless network seems fine.

$37 is so cheap cf even the cheapest Thunderbolt cord.. but I guess it is all relative.

In your laptop did you turn off wifi? It is important that ethernet is the only connection.

Did your ethernet connection get an IP so you actually do have internet??

If so you need to do the following.

    Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

    Setup the TC again.

Then redo the setup from the computer you want to use for TM using Airport Utility.

    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.

If the wireless is still a problem set wireless names like TC24ghz and set the 5ghz to different name.. eg.TC5ghz

    2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.

**3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.

Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC.

Ignore this point if you don't understand it .. post back if you have drop out issues.

    4. Make sure IPv6 is set correctly in the computer. ie link-local only for ethernet and/or wireless depending on which you use. Auto is not good enough.

I have shown wifi but you do the same for ethernet.

Once you complete that you might need to spend a bit of care with the setup as indicated above to make sure the TC never changes IP.. this is important when people use them in bridge mode..

I recommend static IP instead. This post has plenty of info and pics to show how it is done.
