Q: Time Machine (El Capitan) select individual files

For the first time since upgrading to El Capitan, I just tried to go into Time Machine to locate a specific file, but all I get is the desktop for the date in question and it won't let me open the Documents folder (or any folder) and get to individual files.  Has something changed that I need to know to allow me to find and possibly restore just a single file or folder?  I do not want to restore my entire system!
