I got an update for the Best Buy app but it wouldn't update. I deleted the app and tried to reinstall but it still wouldn't update. There is a "1" on the App Store icon but there isn't an app there to update. The BB app is not super important and they will probably fix it over time but how do you get rid of the "1"?

I would delete it and contact Best Buy. It is their app after all. If enough complain they will fix it as it is important to them, more than you.
I have tried calling Best Buy but no one seems to be able to understand or figure out who can help. I went from customer service to Geek Squad and back and forth multiple times and no one ever helped. They may not even know it as an issue...
According to the iTune App Store, this is a wide spread problem. 450+ users have complained giving the app a 1 star-rating over the past couple of days.

Note: Best Buy opened their new technology development center in Seattle, WA just last February with a public announcement in October 2015.
I had the same issue. The only way to get the update badge on the AppStore app was to delete the BestBuy app. I'll do without it until the issue is resolved by BestBuy.
Even after deleting the app, the annoying update notification remains in the App store. Update notification stuck in limbo.
That is strange... The update badge disappeared for me once I deleted the BestBuy app. Maybe try restarting the phone..?

The red "1" update notification remains in the App Store.
I also "Reset All Settings" on my device (not erase content and settings).
No App on device.
The Update Notification remains.
Erased network and iCloud settings.
Restarted device.
The Update Notification remains.
I restored the previous Best Buy app from my app library.
The Update Notification remains.
I tried to update again.
Unable to download the Best Buy app.
Back at square one!
I ended up going into Notifications and just turning off notifications for the App Store...It stops the annoying "1", but BB should stop trying to "improve" their app and go with what was working...
