Q: Broken Save/Open Box?

Hello all!

I was wondering if anyone may be able to solve this problem. Whenever I do Save or Open I get the following box (see pic) that doesn't show anything and I can't see any sidebars etc.... If shutdown my computer and restart it works fine for a while but then will eventually go back to this problem. Can anyone help?Screen Shot 2016-08-06 at 6.00.52 AM.png

    Hello there luckyyellowhog,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you are running into issues when you try to save or open files on your MacBook Pro. I'll be more than happy to point you toward some helpful resources.

To begin, let's make sure that you have a current backup of your Mac. This article provides details on how to create one:

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

Based on what I'm seeing, it looks like you are currently running El Capitan 10.11.5. We did recently release 10.11.6, so it would be beneficial to ensure your Mac is completely up-to-date once your backup is completed. This support resource provides those steps:

Update the software on your Mac

If the issue still persists, it would be very valuable to test the issue in safe mode. This helps to determine if there are any user login items or caches causing issues. Here is an article to walk you through restarting your MacBook in safe mode, as well as what to do if the issue doesn't occur:

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up

If the same thing does happen while in safe mode, the next step will be to create a test user account. This helps to isolate whether the issue is user-specific or system wide. Find out more here:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

You'll also want to pay special attention to this section:

If an issue happens in only one user account

If performing the same steps in a test user account doesn't result in the same unexpected behavior, you most likely don't need to reinstall any apps or OS X.

    • If an issue only happens in one app, check the app's documentation or support website for instructions on troubleshooting specific preference or setting files.
    • If you need help with a specific alert message or issue, search the Apple Support website for the text of the alert message you're seeing.

If an issue happens in more than one user account

If the same unexpected behavior happens in more than one user account on your Mac, try checking for software or hardware issues.

    Take care!
