my Mac mini magic keyboard won't backlight

My new Mac mini doesn't find my magic keyboard so I can turn on the backlight setting. The magic keyboard works wirelessly but doesn't find it using "search bluetooth keyboards" so that I can use the "set up keyboard" in system preferences.
