Q: Safari causes massive power drain

I have a Macbook air running el capitan 10.11.6 and Safari 9.1.2 which seems to be part of the 10.11.6 update. Whenever I open Safari the fan turns on and runs contiuously and the battery quickly drains.  Firefox doesn't have this problem. All preferences look normal. How can I fix this?

Please run EtreCheck and post the report here.

        http://etresoft.com/etrecheck

Download it, open Downloads folder, click on it to open and select ”Open”.

“Choose a problem” from the popup menu box, and then “Start EtreCheck” in the dialog.

Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” .

Paste it here when you reply.

You may have a Safari extension or third party plug-in installed that's causing a conflict.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab then uninstall one extension at a time, quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If it's not an extensions issue, back to Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow Plug-ins then quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that made a difference, follow the instructions for troubleshooting plug-ins here >  If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support

Thanks for your help.  There are no extensions so that wasn't the problem and deselecting allow plugins had no effect.

How many browser tabs/windows do you have open when the Energy tab in Activity Monitor shows Safari dimming the lights? Are these static pages, or do one or multiple have server-side activity updating window content?

Thank you for your help.  I have two files copied below. The first with Safari and the second with Firefox.  It appears to me there is a process hog running with Safari but I don't know how to stop it.

You have adware installed. With Firefox open, run the report again and where you see the red Adware, click Remove. Once complete, run the report again and post a copy into a new reply.

    Remove MacKeeper and McAfee.

Thanks for the reply. MacKeeper is not listed in Applications.  A search in Finder reveals no files for MacKeeper or Zeobit.

        [failed]    com.zeobit.MacKeeper.Helper.plist (2015-01-15) [Support]

        [running]    com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plugin.AntiTheft.daemon.plist (2015-01-15) [Support]

The 2 above show in the report.

See if you can find the file(s) using one of these programs. If you go Finder/View/Show Path Bar, it will show you where it is located.

I went to addwaremedic.com and downloaded malwarebytes. this program identified and removed the offending files in the report.  Everything seemed to work fine for a while but, later, the problem started happening again.  Now activity monitor shows Google.com is causing 100% cpu usage but I have not accessed google. I force quit google.com but it keeps coming back.

In preferences I deleted all website data. I only allow cookies from websites i visit.

None of this is happening with Firefox.

Does that mean that you only have one window (page) open?

I closed Safari and restarted. Now activity monitor says my bank's website is causing 100% CPU usage.  But I didn't go to my bank's website. Something very strange is going on with Safari.

Thanks for the reply. No, nothing else is open. Shut down the computer, restarted, open Safari, go to Yahoo.com and within 30 seconds the fire starts.
