Aug 6, 2016 1:36 PM in response to Kujikabutoby Patcell,It is possible with Thunderbolt 2; however, the full potential of the eGPU will not be realized. Thunderbolt 2 only offers 20Gbps of bandwidth, while modern GPUs need much more than that (I do not have numbers off the top of my head). Also, an external display will be needed (connected directly to the eGPU), as it will cost valuable bandwidth to send the rendered display signal back to the notebook.
There are some success stories on Youtube, but the bottom line is bandwidth with Thunderbolt 2 is a significant bottleneck. External GPUs will start to become much more popular as Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps total bandwidth) is adopted - currently unavailable on any Mac. For example, the new Razer Core eGPU for Razer laptops utilizes Thunderbolt 3.
