First generation ipad

I have a first gen iPad that's just sitting around unused.

I gave it to my husband when he got an iPhone last year. We changed it over to his Apple ID but because it's so old and slow he just,turned it off and put it away.

Would there be a way for him to just use it as an ereader only?? When we take vacations it would be better than carrying a hardcover book. We could just download books to it. Can this be done? I was going to attempt but I didn't want to start deleting things from the old iPad which would in turn make them delete from his phone when it does the auto backup when plugged in.

There are various ebook apps that you might be able to download from the App Store e.g. iBooks, Kindle - the current version of the Kindle app requires iOS 8+ but if it's in your account's purchase history (if it isn't download the current version on your computer's iTunes so that it is) you might be able to download an older compatible version via the Purchased tab in the App Store app on the iPad (Install an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X - Apple Support).

Most ebooks tend to be fairly small (1 to 2 meg ; graphic novels, education books etc can be quite large), so unless the iPad is nearly full you don't necessarily have to delete any existing content from it. Deleting an app or films, music etc from that iPad shouldn't have any affect on the content of his phone

And most ebooks have digital rights-management on them that tie them to their own store's apps, so most ibooks can only be read in the iBooks app etc. - so don't, for example, buy ibooks if you can't get the iBooks app on the iPad.
