Q: various bootcamp/windows issues

Hi all

I have given the chance to 5 apple support reps to answer this and still can't resolve so i am hoping you guys can help.

I am on the latest iMac machine (21.5 inch, 4K retina screen) with OS up to date. I attempted to install windows with bootcamp assistant. I am one of the users who doesn't need a USB drive plugged in for this.

The machine did all the copying of files from my ISO file which is on my local drive but when it rebooted to start the setup of windows it went into a tiny window about 2 inches wide in the middle of the screen. Somehow i managed to do the first stages including entering the product code. When i got to the screen where it shows the drives for installing Windows there was no bootcamp drive! I couldn't use the other drives so had to cancel. Have done this many times now and always after going back to a single volume on the machine (and therefore deleting the bootcamp drive). And yes there was a bootcamp drive, as I could see it in the Disk Utility...albeit with no data on it.

Really appreciate if anyone could help me work out why the setup screen goes small, and also why it can't find my bootcamp drive. As boot camp assist did all of this i can't really find anything i have done wrong.

Thanks and rega

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

You posted in the El Capitan community rather than in the Boot Camp community. I'll ask the hosts to move your thread to the Boot Camp community.

Do you have a Fusion drive? From OSX Terminal, can you post the output of

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

no i don't have the fusion drive

I can post the output for sure but what stage shall i do it at? When i get the issue with the small screen i end up aborting and it reboots. Shall i do it then? Once it reboots i have been formatting back to a single drive and going back to the point i was before the install so that's where my machine is now after the last bad install.

I am downloading a new ISO file from Microsoft at the moment so will try with that and see what happens but the setup is starting fine so i assume that the ISO i have is ok

Post the output in it's current state, and after it has failed, before you restore it back to a single partition.

    Hi there

Ok we have some progress. The new ISO might have made a difference as the setup page came up in full screen  but i still haven't been able to install windows. When i got to the screen where the partitions show i selected the bootcamp partition and chose "format". I then hit "next" and got this message:

"we couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information see the setup log files"

This is the output you wanted to see:

Excellent, please back up OS X, Windows and create a Windows System Restore point.

Time Machine does not back up Windows. The Windows System Restore point is stored on the local disk. If you can, get a second external disk, boot into Windows and format this disk as NTFS and setup a File History (or Backup).
