Q: Can see, but can't access, photos migrated from iPhotos to Photos for Mac

Hi

I have transferred my iPhoto library from my old (white) mac to my new Macbook Air. I can now see my iPhotos on Photos of Mac, but I am unable to export or share them (nothing happens if I click those options), or even copy and paste them. If I try and attach via an e-mail or Pages they do not show up on my photos via Finder (but I can see newer photos not from iPhotos originally). So basically I can see them but can do anything with them.

Has anybody seen this problem?

If this should not happen, my only thought as to why this may be the case is due to some error in migration? I have now installed Library Upgrader on my new Mac (I think I was already required to use it during Migration on the old Mac. but can't remember details) but whilst it can see my iPhotos library, it is greyed out, so I can not try and apply Library Upgrader via new Mac. So I am stuck again. (if this is the solution, I am not sure it is..)

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it? Or is t possible this is just a failure of Apple/iphotos that old photos do not have functionality in Photos for Mac?

Thank you!!

    It certainly has the functionality.

Have you tried repair the Library: Back Up and then hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching Photos. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

The library upgrader is not required unless you hah iPhoto '08 (version 7.x.x) or earlier -

    How exactly did you migrate?

You can certainly try to backup your Photos library and then launch Photos while holding down the option and command keys and repair the database

Thanks Larry. I think I may have iPhoto 7- is that possible? I migrated with a combination of Migration Assistant, and file transfer (where you can see both computer's file structure at the same time) as the Migration Assistant timed out on me.. Unfortunately it was a long time ago now, and I can't be sure which system I used to transfer the photos.

I have now discovered that the Library Upgrader does not work on my new laptop as it says that it should already be able to open on this system, and the same on the old laptop! i.e laptop does not recognise there may be photos on another system/to be changed to another system. So upgrading seems to be an issue if you are transferring from one laptop to another.

However, I have found a work around.. I can re-import the original transferred photos, found in the new Mac's finder folder (i.e not in Photos for Mac) to Photos for Mac and they then seem to function properly!!!

    Thanks.
