Q: Can't move photos from iPhoto to Photos

Hi

I had to wipe my macbook pro (from 2011) a while ago in order to get the last iOS (Yosemite 10.10.5) since I had ignored a few updates and stored all my photos on my external hardrive. Now when I try to migrate them from the hard drive (in iPhoto format) to my updated computer (Photos Version 1.0.1 (215.65.0) I get a message saying "Repair Library Permissions. This photo library is locked or you do not have the permissions to make changes to it. Photos can try to repair the permissions."

Clicking repair doesn't work and I have tried to change all the permissions in the info regarding the external hard drive to "Read & Write" but that made no difference. Found a suggestion online to click the "Ignore ownership" button for the hard drive but I don't seem to have such a button.

What do I do? Many thanks!

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

User File Ownership - Reset   see post by Linc Davis

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.
