    You should be able to upgrade to El Capitan, free from the Mac App Store (in Applications). Some people in a similar situation have found it running rather slowly - it's really optimised for a SSD rather than a spinning hard disk, so assuming the latter is what you have this might be a consideration. In any event you should if possible clone your drive to an external hard disk so that if you're not happy with El Capitan or have any installation problems you can clone back and retrieve your current situation.
