Q: New problem for me. The required index.xml file is missing. window prevents me for opening a page file. Help!

I have used pages for years and two days ago the message: "The required index.xml file is missing." prevented me from opening a pages file. (a file for a library to be sorted) How do I get around this hurdle? What is the "xml" file?
