Q: Prohibitively Slow iMac on El Capitan

Late 2012 21.5 iMac, with 16GB Ram and 700+ GB free space on the drive, is running so slowly, from startup through operations that it is unusable. I have tried SMC resets and safe mode. The issues persist in safe mode despite removal of startup items and non-system launch daemons.

Honestly though I'm not sure what the issue is or what the next steps should be. If I can get it up enough to run Etrecheck I will post the system info.

I can't identify a point in time or an application installation that I think would be suspect. This has been an ongoing issue for a while but now it's worse than I've seen it. I'm a bit suspicious of Firefox at the moment. My kids watch a lot of YouTube videos but I'm not able to get the browser up an running to clear the cache. I'd just delete it and re-install but I'd like to at least get the bookmarks out first.

Worst comes to worst I'll go get an external hard drive to backup my files (our Timecapsule has decided to stop working this month too) and re-install. Hoping there's something lest drastic I'm missing to get it running well and keep it that way.

You have some troublesome software:  anti-virus and clean my mac crapware.

But the irst order of business: it looks like your disk is failing.   That would certainly slow things waaaaay down. I would back up everything and have the disk checked out/replaced.

Worst comes to worst I'll go get an external hard drive to backup my files ...

Definitely do that. The possibility of drive failure becomes increasingly likely if your Mac's performance is equally slow in "Safe Mode", which you already confirmed. I recommend you don't use your Mac at all until you're ready to create that backup.

Clearing Firefox's cache is not likely to solve anything.

That Mac is a sordid mess of useless "anti-virus" and "cleaning" garbage, but that's a moot point since its drive has failed and must be replaced.

When restoring its content from a Time Machine backup, do not reinstall the junk.

Hey, thanks everyone for your help. Here's what ended up happening and solving the problem.

With the results of the etrecheck report I started backing up my files. I called up Apple to set up a support appointment to replace the drive. In talking with support I mentioned that the computer was running slow in SafeMode as well. We tried a few things on the software end to see if there was anything there. I started a disc verification in Disc Utility but it failed. Support had me run Diagnostic Mode to check whether it really was a hardware issue or a software issue. Everything passed. There was clearly something messed up with the drive that Disc Utility couldn't fix but it didn't appear to be hardware related.

Eventually it led to reformatting the disc and reinstalling OS X. The iMac seems to be running just fine now.
