Q: External Monitor Not Entering Power Save Mode

Hello,

I have an old 2006 MacBook1,1 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. When on my desk, it is closed & plugged into an external monitor. I am using an Apple Mini DVI to VGA adapter to connect it to the monitor. No other peripherals are plugged in as it is controlled via Synergy. My problem is that when I put the computer to sleep, the monitor goes into its self check screen rather than power save mode (sleeping). I know that the monitor should go to sleep because I have used it with many other computers & have never had a problem like this before. I believe that it is either the MacBook (possibly hardware but I am leaning towards software) or the Mini DVI to VGA Adapter (even though the adapter is Apple). I appreciate any help that you can give me. I apologize if I made the question too hard to understand & just ask if you need clarification. Thank You!

I think this is just what they do. I have a Dell monitor plugged into a late 2008 MacBook running Mavericks with minidisplay to DVI adapter and clamshell mode and the same thing happens. On the rare occasion it has behaved properly but I have not been able to determine what I am doing differently.  The monitor is somehow still sensing a display there but no video signal is being provided by the computer in sleep mode so the monitor fusses about a bad connection.  I have taken to powering down the monitor each night (I wonder how long the on/off button will last) and during the day I use a screensaver.  I did some research about this a few months ago on the web and didn't find any solutions, sorry.  You may wish to play around with settings such as video mirroring. I have my monitor set to mirror the MacBook's display since I am using the computer in clamshell mode.
