Q: iMac fan runs full speed

Hi!

My iMac fan runs full speed when I watch videos online. Is there a way to find out what might cause this problem?

 

Imac 2013

OS 10.9.5

2,9 Ghz, core i5

8 Gb ram

1TB HD (900 free)

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

    Use Activity Monitor to find out.

     

    Finder > Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor > CPU

    Thank you. I checked activity monitor. Maximum %CPU showed 0.8 usage google chrome. Energy impact was also low, 1.2 google chrome.

    Then I ran Etrecheck and 7 adware files found could this adware cause fans run full speed?

    Adware can cause various problems.

     

    Click the Remove (in red) button next to the items shown to get rid of the adware.

    The CPU usage in your EtreCheck report is low, so I do not think that is the problem. I could be wrong, but if the fan is only speeding up during video usage...? Then I also might suspect that the fan is running faster to help control the graphics temperature.

     

    Personally I would...

     

    1. Shutdown and check the the air-intake on the back to make sure that it free from foreign objects or dust.

    (if the vent is caked with dust, I would gently vacuum it off while the computer is shut-down and disconnected from the power)

     

    2. Make sure that the iMac is in a cool and well ventilated area.

    (If not, then I would try moving it to a cooler area of the house)

     

    Then if the problem still persist...?  I would seriously think about making a service appointment ASAP.

    I was unable to delete malware as I don't have Time Machine set up. I will vacuum clean first and then see how it works.

    Adware removal

     

    1. Use  Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac to remove adware.

     

         https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/

     

       Download, install , open,  and run it by clicking “Scan for Adware” button   to remove adware.

       Once done, quit Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

     

     

     

    2. Disable Extensions and test.

     

       Safari > Preferences > Extensions

       Select and disable all extensions and test.

       Enable Extensions one by one and test.

       To uninstall any extension, select it and click the “Uninstall” button.

     

    3. Safari > Preferences > Search > Search engine:

         Select your preferred search engine

     

    4.  Visit the site you want it be the Home page

     

         Safari > Preferences > General >  Homepage

         Click the button “Set to Current Page” button.
