but if your unable to get them to copy you will need format the external drive to something other than NTFS unless you want to install software to enable it. to take full advantage of the drive on OS X you should format to Mac Extended Journaled through the Disk Utility.

If we knew where on the iMac the photos currently are stored we could give a more specific answer. For example, if you have the photos currently stored in the Photos app, simply select the photos you want to put on the EHD and then click File - Export and follow the on-screen prompts to tell it where in the EHD you want them stored.
If you want to move the Photos library from the computer's internal storage to an EHD, that can be done too.
In short, you may want to re-write your question and try to be a little more specific about what you are attempting to achieve.
