IPhone 4s won't update from IOS 7

My IPhone 4s won't update from the IOS 7 and I need the IOS 8 for school. I had another IPhone 4 and it was updated all the way to IOS 9, it broke and I got a new one. For some odd reason it won't update and I don't understand why, can someone please help me?
