Q: Unable to Export, Menu Greyed Out (FCP X)

Hi Everyone,

I am having a hard time exporting a project from FCP X into a finalized Quicktime. At first I thought my problem was that my clips were still on the SD Card. Then I dragged the media on to the HD and relinked the "camera media". The links are all good and the clips are on the internal memory but I cannot do a final export. The menu is "greyed out" even though all the background tasks and rendering have been completed. What am I missing? One problem may be that the files on the timeline are both MP4s and AVCHDs. It plays the clips fine but is this mix of formats an issue? I have to say AVCHDs are a bit of pain. Thanks for your time.

Start off by resetting FCP X.

Hold Option-Command as you start FCP X.

    Hit Delete Preferences.

    Al

Did you copy the avchd folder structure and link into the files inside that? If so, they are still seen as in a camera card.

You'll need to reimport, not relink.

Thanks for your response. I dragged the main AVCHD directory file into my documents. When I go to import though it does partition these into individual clips. I wonder if I drag the MTS files whether they will work or not, I may have to convert everything to MP4 *sigh*. Will let you know

Please clarify: after you dragged the AVCHD directory to your drive, did you *import* or *relink*?

If you somehow were able to relink - that is the word you used in your original post - to something inside the copy of the AVCHD directory, it will still be seen as being "in camera" and that would explain the inability to export.

If that is the case, what you need to do is File->Import->Reimport from Camera/Archive. You can reimport from the copy in your drive.

Sorry I didn't "relink" but "reimported from camera" and although that makes it all work fine in the project it will not export.

Here is another crazy layer. WHen I drag the MTS files from the stream folder they work just fine. The problem is on my machine which has FCP it doesn't allow me to go into the file directory. I have to go back to another machine to extract the MTS files. Anyway my head is spinning.

    Thanks

Maybe the problem is not with the media, but with the project.

Try creating a new project, add one of those files. Export. Does it work?

If it does, then try selecting all from the project which is not exporting, copy, paste into a new project. Does the new project export?

Yeah I tried that already. Its definitely a media issue but again the media works fine within FCP itself.

You can probably extract the MTS files if you control-click the AVCHD package, choose Show package contents, and drill down. I don't have one at hand to tell the exact hierarchy, but I'm pretty sure that should work - but then again it should not be necessary, anyway... weird.
