Q: Audiobook query?

I've bought and downloaded an audiobook from the iTunes store and placed it in my iCloud Drive (to save space on my iPad) However when i try to open and play the audiobook from the iCloud folder on my iPad it won't play.  So do I have to physically place the audiobook on the iPad in order for it to play?

Thanks.

Yes you can use iCloud for audiobooks to archive past purchases (since audiobooks are not redownloadable from the store) and to sync them to your devices. But to listen to one you must download it to the device in iBooks. Audiobooks in iCloud does not support streaming.

see Use iCloud Drive or iBooks to access your PDF files, ePub files, and books - Apple Support

Those basic features also apply to audiobooks and iCloud.

Thank you.  So if I understand your reply and the document you referenced downloading the audiobook directly from iCloud does nothing as it won't play unlike downloading an MP3 file.  However if I load the book onto the iPad it will play via the iBooks app.

If you download it to your iCloud drive on the device, you will have to use the "open with" selection and choose iBooks to play it.

If you use both a Mac computer and an iPad, turn on iBooks iCloud library support in the iCloud settings of each device.  Once your ebooks and audio books are in the iBooks iCloud library, you can download them to any device you have with the iBooks app installed.

From iBooks, you can access and download any ebooks and audio books you have sync'd to iCloud via iBooks on either your iPad, iPhone or Mac.

Audiobooks purchased from the iTunes store can now be redownloaded on demand like most other purchases. See Download your past purchases - Apple Support. It doesn't appear to be possible to stream the content, which is what you would want if you were trying to save space. I suspect an audiobook file accessed from iCloud Drive won't behave in quite the same way as an eBook or PDF. I would normally suggest testing, but I think:

However when i try to open and play the audiobook from the iCloud folder on my iPad it won't play.

    settles it.
