Q: Exchange emails deleted while in flight mode not synced to server

A user I support recently deleted a large number of emails from the Exchange mailbox on their iPad (Air 2, iOS 8.3) while in flight mode. They then turned the device off. When the iPad came back online some hours later the deletions were not synced with the Exchange 2010 server. The server reported an active ActiveSync relationship with the device, further emails sent/received/deleted behave and sync as normal.

I could not see a way to force the iPad to sync the deletions through to Exchange, I eventually rebuilt the iPad's Exchange mail profile and asked the user to delete the offending emails from Outlook.

My question is:

Can this be prevented in the future? Is there perhaps a time frame after which an iOS device in flight mode would forget it needs to sync mailbox actions with the server once flight mode is exited?

I realise the user is on an older version of iOS, would this have been mitigated by their being on the most recent version?

Thanks

iPad Air, iOS 8.3, Exchange 2010
