NAS storage compatibility

Question

NAS storage compatibility

i have a mac and my friend is a windows guy, he has a synology 1515 NAS box, the way he describes it is exactly what i need for my small business in particular the email host management and remote access of files.

iv trawled through the internet and some sites say that NAS boxes or certain ones are not compatible with Mac OS can anyone myth bust this or point me in the right direction to a unit that will sort me out and do all the tasks this unit does?

Most, if not all, NAS devices available today work with Macs.

FWIW, I have the Synology DS916+ and it works flawlessly with all of my Macs & Windows PCs. In addition, the Synology devices come with Disk Manager OS, which among other things, supports Time Machine backups.

Regardless of which you buy, check with the store's return policy if you become dissatisfied with your choice.

This is my opinion so take it for what it's worth.

Unfortunately Apple does not support any third party NAS solutions. That does not mean they don't work, it simply means you have to rely on the NAS vendor 100% for support. Where I have noticed this comes into play is when a user upgrades OS X without checking to see if their NAS vendor has upgraded the NAS system software to support the new version. Sometimes NAS vendors take months to upgrade and sometimes they don't at all which means the user is left with a problem.

The point I am trying to make is if you decide to go with a NAS, you are pretty much on your own. If you are considering upgrading any software (including the OS) then check with your NAS developers to see if they support that version.
