Q: Can I leave the public beta without restoring?

I have had no issues with the beta, so I don't need to downgrade my phone. I am wondering if I can just unenroll then wait for the next general release with a higher build than the one I am on. So say I leave the public beta once the official iOS 10.0 is released, will my phone offer me the regular version of 10.0.1 when that comes out a few weeks later? Or will I be in a limbo land where no updates are offered again?

You can wait for the official release.

See the information below from https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/faq

Always back up your iOS device before installing beta software. To get a shipping release of iOS on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can simply install the final version of the software you are testing when it appears in Software Update. If you would like to go back to a previously released version, you must first erase the beta software, then re-install the latest shipping version of iOS, and finally restore from your previously saved iTunes backup.

In addition to what FoxFifth has provided, if there are more versions of the beta before the official release, you need to know that your beta will expire at a point. If there is an additional beta release and you do not intend to use the later version, your older version will expire and you will lose use of your device. That is the only other thing that could affect you if you do not want to use beta any longer. If another release is not made before the general release, then you can update to the general public release and not involve yourself again.

Thank you. So to clarify, I should expect to see the official release in Software Update? If I install this, do I need to un-enroll or will that do it for me automatically? No need to research for me if you don't know, I suppose I will find out in a month either way.

You are correct, sorry, the info I needed was there.

You can't just un-enroll and leave it at that, but at least you don't have to do a full restore. I didn't know the force-restart whilst connected to iTunes trick.

    Thanks for all your help.
