Q: My time capsule stopped backing up my computer 80 days ago and nothing I have done has helped.  What do I do?

I have had my Time Capsule for two years.  Until about 80 days ago it automatically backed up my computer.  Then it stopped.  I think it may be "full", but I don't understand how since it is a 3T storage unit.  It only has one backup stored on it now.  What should I do?  I've tried re-booting it and that didn't work.

    On your Mac......

Click on the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the computer screen

    Click Open Time Machine Preferences

How much of the Time Capsule drive has been used?

    Close the window

Click the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the computer screen

    Click Back Up Now

    What exact error message appears?

    Hello Bob,

I have the same problems with my Time Machine.

The answer of your first question: 1.75 Tb of 3 Tb is available.

Second question: The (intern) disc cannot be found.

I hope that you understand the text (is Dutch) on the 3 pictures.

I hope that you can help me out with this one.

    Thank you.

I think you are suffering a typical problem with the TC getting lost.

    Have you reboot the network?

    Power off everything..

    Power on again in sequence.

    1. Modem (Wait 2min)

    2. TC (Wait 2min)

    3. Express (Wait 2min)

    4. Everything else.

The TC should reappear in airport utility. If that fails.. tell us a bit more info.

Is the TC in bridge mode? If so that can mess things up.. You should at least have its IP fixed.

What I suspect is happening here is the computer is getting connection from the Express.. this messes up the DNS and it forgets where the TC.. but the TC must be working otherwise the Internet and Express would fail.

Apple have said that for the TC to work reliably for backups you must connect directly to it. ie Ethernet (by far the best) or wireless direct to the TC.. not via the main router and not via the Express.

Running a static IP setup I find helpful. If you need help to apply this to your situation give me info about your main router.. its IP and DHCP range.

My Gen5 TC after running fine for a couple of years also just became unreliable. Mine was particularly on the ethernet side. Wireless was fine but the WAN link went flakey. I have since removed it and gone back to using a Gen4 TC which I think was a better design.

Only 11 gigs of 3 TB is available.  The error message says backup disk not available.  Try backing up again when Home Airport Time Capsule is available.  Why doesn't it just write over what's there or just add the new stuff?  My computer storage and my extra storage drive together are 2 TB, but neither is full or close to full.

This sounds like the Time Capsule is corrupted. If you tried to partition it it could have broke. Time Capsules are just hard drives that act as a NAS so they are bound to break. I believe that you have a corrupted disk.

TM cannot work with that small a space left.

I don't think the disk is corrupted. The problem is TM has issues deleting old backups after you upgrade the computer OS.

The best idea is get 3TB usb drive and archive the TC. Archive option is in the airport utility.

Then wipe the TC disk using erase and start over.. that will fix any problem if they do exist.

I believe that you have a corrupted disk.

Then, please provide altocj with the quick, simple steps to run an integrity test on the Time Capsule disk.....to see if your guess is correct?

That makes sense.  I'll invest in one, and do a backup to it.  How do I wipe the TC?

Open AirPort Utility on your Mac    (Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)

Click on the picture of the TC

Click Edit in the smaller window that appears

Click the Disks tab at the top of the next window

    Click Erase Disk

    Erase Disk 1.png

The Quick Erase option will only take a few minutes. If you can spare the 3-5 hours to use the Zero Out Data option, this would be a much better way to wipe the drive.

    Hello LaPastenague,

Thank you for quick respons. I am very grateful.

It seems that things are getting worser.

I think you are right about the computer is connect to the Express. I saw that a few days ago. I was wondered about it, but not confused.

What have I done today? I powered down the Express, to be certain that the computer is connected to the TM.

It makes sense that the Express is not to be seen in the APU.

But the TM is also not visible by the APU!!!! And now I am getting worried.

Later today I will power down everything like you wrote earlier. And then I will power on in the sequence as you suggested.

O by the way, the WiFi is working good.

I cannot connect the computer by ethernet (unfortuntely) it has to be with WiFi.

How can make the computer connect directly to the TM?

    Is my backup disc corrupted?

As written I will later this day power everything down, and then one by one power on. How this has worked out I wil let you know in another message.

In advance thank you for your help.

It seems that your TM is very corrupted. Possibly not only the HDD but the network controller for Intel internet. This is very bad. I would first try to format the disk like others have said and then start from there.

There is a quick, easy test to find out if the Time Capsule disk is corrupted. Do you know what it is?

If yes, please provide the steps.

If no, then you are simply guessing.
