For information about the Other category in the Storage display, please see this Apple Support Topic:
OS X: What is "other" space in About This Mac? - Apple Support
Omni DiskSweeper can show you the precise size and location of all your files. It will inventory your disk starting from the files that take up the most space. It can also give you a more accurate read of disk space than Finder or Storage Tab of About this Mac. If you want you can even delete files from OmniDisk Sweeper. But be careful some of the items may be important to your system.

Aug 11, 2016 9:07 AM in response to macjackby kilpauk,Thanx a lot. I did download OmniDisksweeper. Since it has been cautioned to be careful while deleting the files, I had trepidation to go ahead with deletion of one file listed 'private'. But the display continues same as earlier. Is this App safe?

Aug 11, 2016 9:14 AM in response to kilpaukby lllaass,OmniDisksweeper is safe. However, if you downloaded it from an aggregator like MacUpdate or similar you could have also downloaded adware, especially if you had to download a downloader, vice only downloading the OmniDisksweeper app.
Did you rebuild the Spotlight Index?

Aug 11, 2016 9:18 AM in response to kilpaukby macjack,Yes, OmniDisk Sweeper is safe with the exception of deleting files, that depends on user knowledge. I wouldn't delete any files named private unless I knew what they were. What is the path to the files you are talking about?
