What exactly happens when you try to buy something ? Your account's balance should automatically be used for your purchases, there isn't any setting to change how items are charged - if you are a family organiser in family sharing, or trying to gift, you can't use your balance.

HI, because this our first apple device, I am not familiar with all connotations. When I go to make a purchase, be it free or charged, I only get the credit card option, so I am stumped, just would like to use the credit, mainly because it has been sitting there for months, I usually just take the easy option.

What exactly happens, what messages/prompts show on the screen ? If you are being prompted to 'review' the account then you will need to enter valid payment details before the account can be used to download anything - the card shouldn't be charged (except for a temporary store holding charge which your card issuer should automatically remove within a few days or so), and you should be able to remove the card after entering it

It just comes up with the credit card details, and no other option, and as I have gone ahead previously and the card has been charged, so obviously hasn't used the credit that is there.  From what I am reading in your reply, you are saying I should remove my credit card details any time I use it, is that right?

Do you currently have card details on your account ? If you do, and if you aren't a family organiser in family sharing, try logging into the account (not when trying to download something e.g. by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store) and see if you get the 'none' option : Change or remove your Apple ID payment information - Apple Support

The credit card should only be charged if you are a family organiser or gifting an item or an amount. If that isn't the card try contacting iTunes Support and see if they can see why it's happening - there is a 'contact us' link at the bottom right of every page on here
