Usually I have to log in to the account online, and delete them there and in the archives also, Gmail is the worst on this, even if you make your settings on your mac to take them off the server after downloading your mail to your mac, it still stores them, yahoo mail i like. , then that will allow you to permanently delete them from your home computer.

Click on the messages or conversations while holding the command key to have a multiple selection, then click the delete button in the mail toolbar or simply hit the delete key. It most probably move your deleted messages to trash mailbox (to change this behavior go to: Mail > Preferences, click accounts, then click mail behavior), from there you can permanently empty the trash mailbox.

Another way to selecting multiple messages is to search messages of specific dates or of people (through mail search field), then delete those messages by selecting them.

Depending on the settings, sometimes, when you delete messages it doesn't go to trash mailbox but simply hide and remain intact on its original location temporarily (to show/hide these messages go to: view> Show deleted messages or view> Hide/Show deleted messages).

For further detail you can check back to Apple's thread:

Hi Karl,

I humbly apologize if I couldn't answer your query properly. According to this link by Apple:

https://support.apple.com/kb/PH22270?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US

It states: "For IMAP accounts (such as iCloud or Gmail), copies of messages are stored on incoming mail servers until they are deleted."

To the extent of my understanding, it seems that when you delete your messages permanently they are deleted from mail servers automatically, we cannot have emails on our mailbox while deleting them from servers, and in the previous link Apple has given a way to delete messages temporarily & permanently in different heads.

Wondering. This is just a few years old, and I can not find it on ‘modern‘ :-(((((( applications.

in the following images my comment is written in red.

Wheel to open a little menu in the left sidebar of mail main window

User uploaded file

The window opened by the option ‘Account info…’ It allows selecting mails situated on the server and deleting them.

Any questions? The matter is important on a workflow with several distributed workstations.
