Q: How do I search for songs (via song title) in iPod Touch 3rd Generation?

Hi Everyone

I'm asking this on behalf of a friend who has a 3rd Generation iPod Touch. He uploaded the songs (mp3s) from iTunes to his iPod just fine, however, when he tried to search for them, he couldn't find them. One of the songs could only be found via Artist's name and the other, no matter what he tried, couldn't be found. He had to manually scroll down the list of over 4000 songs to find it.

Can someone tell me how to change the settings (be it in the iPod or iTunes on his computer or any other way) so that he will be able to search for songs via song title or anyway he pleases?

Thanks so much for all the help!

    Hello aympwm,

Thanks for asking your question here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand how important it is to be able to search for your songs. I would first recommend that they verify the song titles and artist information was saved when they imported the songs into iTunes. But before we jump into trying to solve this, let's make sure all their data is safe.

The first thing we want to ensure is that all your friend's data is safe by making a backup. They can make a backup in iCloud or iTunes. Use this article for help with that: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Then, to make sure the iTunes library and all their songs are safe, go ahead and make a backup of it as well. You will need to use this help article: Manage and back up your iTunes media library.

Once we have your friend's data safe, they will want to check in iTunes if the information is correct for each song. There is an article titled "If you don’t see song information". I will provide you with the 4 different links for this article. You will only need to check the one that is related to your computer (a Mac or a PC) and iTunes version (11 or 12).

iTunes 11 for Mac: If you don’t see song information

iTunes 12 for Mac: If you don’t see song information

iTunes 11 for Windows: If you don’t see song information

iTunes 12 for Windows: If you don’t see song information

If you have song names or the steps in that article did not solve the issue, they can manually modify the information, and then sync the songs back over to their iPod. Again, there are 4 different links, but they only need to check the one relating to you or your friend's information.

iTunes 11 for Mac: Edit song and CD information

iTunes 12 for Mac: Edit song and CD information

iTunes 11 for Windows: Edit song and CD information

iTunes 12 for Windows: Edit song and CD information

Thanks again for asking your question here in the Apple Support Communities! Have a great rest of your day.

Hello Tim and thank you for your reply,

I have indeed used all of these songs and such for many different devices interchangeably.  I just got this 3rd generation iPod because my 1st gen touch FINALLY stopped producing sound from the AUX port and therefore made it pretty unusable for most of my daily life uses.  So, my itunes library has all the same music on my iphone, mac, iPad AND my previous ipod touch and they all work fine.  It's not the music that's the issue, it is the search feature that is where the problem lies.  For example, I wanted to listen to Prince's Little Red Corvette.  The song is in my list and plays fine on this very iPod, I just cant search for it.  When i search in the top bar in the music section all that pops up is artists and albums.  I find it very inconvienent that I cannot search by song when I have thousands of songs.  If this were the case I may as well have an old, brick-style iPod if I cannot utilize the search functions.  I am not super savy in these matters (obviously), but I certainly feel like it is a simple fix of some option not being selected somewhere.  I cannot see this iPod not having an option for me to search for music directly by song title, it is just a matter of finding out why it is acting this way.

Thanks again and hopefully we can get to the bottom of this!

    Hello aympwm,

Thanks for continuing with the issue here in the Apple Support Communities. Since the music is fine on all other devices, the only thing we can try is to erase the iPod and to set it up new using iTunes.

The first thing we want to ensure is that all your data is safe. You can make a backup in iCloud or iTunes. Use this article for help with that: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Once you have a backup, you will need restore your iPod back to factory settings using iTunes. This option will erase all the data on your iPod. Please ensure you have your backup completed prior to doing this step. The reason we need to use iTunes to do this step is because we need iTunes to help install a fresh version of iOS to the iPod. This help article will help you to do this step: Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings. Please ensure you set the device up as new, and do not restore any information from an iCloud or iTunes backup yet.

Once the iPod is set up as new, you will need to re-download a couple of songs to test if you can search. I recommend starting with iTunes purchased songs first. You can re-download these when you sign in to the iTunes Store from the purchased tab. This article will help: Download your past purchases. If the issue is no longer happening, try restoring a couple of songs that your imported from other sources. If the issue is only occurring with those songs imported from other sources, there is an issue with those songs.

If this issue is no longer happening, we know the issue was with some data on the device or in the iOS version, which will most likely be saved in your backups. You can manually bring data back using iCloud or iTunes, but do not restore from the backup as you will bring the problem right back in. Depending on whether you have a Mac or PC and the iTunes version you have, you can use one of these 4 help articles will assist you in getting your music and other data back to your iPod from iTunes:

    1. iTunes 11 for Mac: Connect or disconnect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad

    2. iTunes 11 for Windows: Set up syncing for iPod, iPhone, or iPad

    3. iTunes 12 for Mac: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad

    4. iTunes 12 for Windows: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad

If the issue is still occurring, you may want to have the iPod checked at an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store. They can check the iPod hardware. Use this link to find a service provider in your area: Apple find locations.

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.
