Q: Time Capsule initial set up, sharing

So, a total newbie question from a long time Windows user.  I'm thinking about making the jump from Windows PC to Mac Book Pro.  One of my concerns is storage capacity.  I understand that a time capsule is designed to be used for back up only.  However, is there a way to use it as external storage (NAS) as well? If not can an external HD be connected to the USB port and used as a shared drive for an IPad and Mac book?

Thanks in advance.

You understand correctly that the Time Capsule was primarily designed to work in conjunction with Time Machine for backups. However, it can be used as a simple NAS device as well. Ideally, you do not want to use the TC's internal drive for both. In addition, you will not be able to repartition this drive to support both goals simultaneously.

What I would suggest you consider is getting an external USB drive and attached that to the TC's USB port. You can then share out that drive for your "NAS." You would then use its internal drive for backups.

Better yet, if your budget is not too limited, you may want to consider getting a dedicated NAS device and just get a wireless router, like the AirPort Extreme to provide your Wi-Fi network. The Extreme also has a USB port which you can attach an external drive to.
