Q: Can't send pictures from iPad to Hotmail

I know this problem has been asked and addressed many times, but I've yet to find a solution.

For some reason, my iPad will no longer let me send any pictures to my Hotmail account. I've had this problem once before and was able to find the solution, but not this time. Anyway, I've tried quitting all apps, restarting the iPad, resetting the iPad, deleting the mail account, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

iPad, iOS 9.3.4

Explain what that means, please. Does your iPad run away when you try to send email?

I can't send any photos/videos to my Hotmail account account through my Camera App.

I would select what I want to send, click the Mail icon, type in my address, and Send.

    It never arrives.

Do you mean send from your Hotmail account, or do you mean send from some other account to your Hotmail account? Remember, Mail is just an interface to the servers for your various email accounts. What happens when you create an email with a photo attachment and try to send it? The Mail app may limit attachments to a certain size. Have you checked the size of the photos?

What account are you using to send from?

Thank you for your response, Diana. I know about the size limit. That's not it. As I wrote above, I initially open up my Camera App, select the photo I want, and send it via the Mail App. I haven't had this problem for over a year. Something has changed, but I can't figure out what.

So, I'm sending from my iPad Mail App to my Hotmail account on my other computer.

How large is the photo? Have you checked your hotmail junk/spam folder? Do you get a bounce mail notification? Is your mail app configured properly? Can you send an email with no photos to your hotmail account?

Good questions. The photo is 1.9MB. That's not the problem. Nothing is in my Junk folder. I believe my Mail App is configured properly. I deleted it and added it again. And no, I can't even send an email without pictures.

Thanks for taking the time to help. Much appreciation.

What mail account are you using in the iPad Mail app? As I said, mail accounts are not "on" computers or devices. They're on servers that we connect to using apps or mail programs. So, when you send fro Mail like this, it's using the server for the account you've configured as primary. As ShagCA suggested, can you send email with no attachments from the account you're using? If it's Hotmail, you may need to update some settings.

You need to look up the correct settings for Hotmail and update them in the Mail settings. Especially SSL and the port for SMTP.

Ok, so you can't use iOS mail app to send an email to your hotmail account. Can you use mail app to send email to any email address other than your hotmail? Which mail provider is iOS mail app configure for?

That's so funny you said that. I was following the directions to something I found on Knowledgeable and it seemed to trigger something. However, I'm not exactly sure why. I clicked on the SMTP and saw that it was On. I then turned On the "Other SMTP Servers" and changed the password to the email account I was sending to". For some reason, this worked.  Anyway, everything seems to be working now. Thank you both for all your help.

    Directions I followed on Knowledgebase:

If you find you are unable to send email from your iPhone or iPad, it may be because your provider is blocking connections on port 25. To resolve this you need to alter the port that your iPhone or iPad uses to send mail which can be done as follows.

Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars and select the account you wish to change.

On the next screen, scroll down to the "Outgoing Mail Server" section and select the SMTP server that is listed.

You should now see a Primary Server listed, select this server and on the next screen, change the "Server Port" to 587.

This should now allow you to send emails from your iPhone or iPad.

Good. After a tedious search, I found this https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Add-your-Outlook-com-account-to-another -mail-app-73f3b178-0009-41ae-aab1-87b80f… which seems to give the settings for Outlook.com, which has replaced Hotmail. I just wanted to note this for the record, since it's pretty hard to track down.

Thank you again, Diana, for all your help. I usually like to figure out problems myself, but I had devoted 2 hours to this and I wasn't getting anywhere. The solution is out there, you just need to do some digging.
