Q: Problem with IMovie and Quick time

Hey everyone,

I'm facing an unexpected problem with I Movie and Quicktime, and I was wondering if anyone had already experienced that:

I want to create a movie based on shots taken from my personal video camera. I started working with IMovie to create an opening sequence and added a musical soundtrack. I exported the scenes in Quick Time format without any problem. Nevertheless, when I merge the sequence exported from I Movie with the shots from my video camera, the sound track totally disappears.

I checked on the Internet and I saw that there could be a "Codecs" problem. To avoid that, I exported the IMovie sequence with the same Codecs as the one from my video camera files.

Now if I compare the files exported from I Movie and those from my video camera, they have identical characteristics. However, the soundtrack still disappears when I merge them.

Could someone please help me solving this issue?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Regards

Not based solely on what you have already stated.

How are you "merging" the files? (I.e., a "QuickTime format" is any form of data compatible with the sourcing platform and the specific QT structure embed in actual use that is stored in an MOV file container on any of up to 99 possible tracks.) Also, which app are you using for playback of the "merged" file? (I.e., some media players ignore secondary audio tracks resulting from certain methods of "merging" files so it is important to know how the files were "merged", whether or not the audio data is "scattered" across multiple tracks, and/or whether or not the media player being used supports playback of multiple, sequential audio tracks.)

I checked on the Internet and I saw that there could be a "Codecs" problem. To avoid that, I exported the IMovie sequence with the same Codecs as the one from my video camera files.

What specific codecs and settings using which specific version of iMovie? (Current Mac OS X operating systems have both QT X and "classic" QT structure embeds so it is important to know which structure is being used here and how.)

Now if I compare the files exported from I Movie and those from my video camera, they have identical characteristics. However, the soundtrack still disappears when I merge them.

Typically, you should be examining the "merged" file to determine why it is not playing back correctly rather than comparing the characteristics of the source files being merged. The basic flaw here appears to be in your project workflow. I.e., you appear to be performing a two-step operation rather than editing multiple media files in iMove and then exporting the combined results as a video whose audio and video tracks have been flattened and exported to standardized compression formats having unified settings, features and characteristics.
