Q: can I use a Time Machine backup that backed up a 1T computer to start a new Macbook Pro with 128GB ssd?

My 2009 Macbook Pro hard drive died. I bought a new Macbook Pro (13" early 2015 version) My old Macbook had a 1TB drive as well as the Time Machine back up. The problem I see now is that the new Macbook Pro only has a 128GB of flash storage. Is there a way to use an external hard drive and restore the new Mac using the Time machine back up?

not if all the data you want to restore exceeds the size of the SSD.
aside from that a common practice with an SSD that constrains size over speed should include an external drive for data so your SSD contains system and applications and your data can grow to fit your needs on some other device without tanking the storage of the SSD.

You can use Time Machine to selectively restore desired data.
