can't sync Iphone 5SE with iTunes

Hi,

I bought a new Iphone 5SE and I wanted to put all my data back on it from my previous Iphone.

Itunes wouldn't recognise my Iphone. I updated Itunes up to version 11.4. Your website showed this was the latest version, although I found that there was a 12.4 version to but when I click "download" I 'm being transferred back to the version 11.4.

I have an iMac version 10.6.8. I did a software update.

How can I sync my Iphone SE with Itunes?

Please help me.

Please note that the SE requires iTunes 12.3.3 in order to be recognized. If your Mac is older and not running El Capitan, a check for the latest iTunes could report that iTunes is up to date even though it is not running 12.3.3. If so all that means is that it is up to date for that version of OS X and you would have to update to El Capitan to get 12.3.3

Thank you, but what is El Capitan? Is it safe?

How do I download it safely without risking my iMac to stop functioning?

My iMac is about 4-5 years old.
