Live photos in imovie

Hi there - does anyone know how to use the live photos (ios 9.3.4) in imovie (10.1.2). I really want to use the short clips in a movie I am making rather than just a still or ken burns effect.

Thanks

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), iOS 9.3.4

I imported photos i believe with "image capture" to a folder of my choosing. The 3 second movie clips were .MOV files with the same number-name as the photo. I was able to put them in iMovie and eventually get it to work. The clips were much more "stop action" looking than regular video, but I still used them. My other problem was solved as I found 2 hidden black frames in some separate video clips, there is a you tube video about this. You have to export the movie as a mp4 or something, when it stops early, find the partial exported file, watch at what point it end. Then go back into the iMovie editor and search frame by frame at the time your fragment video ended, there will be a black frame, i deleted .1 seconds of the video with that frame in it. Then was able to export until i found another frame that was black and did it again. there was a noticeable to me only jump in final movie where the missing black frame was removed.

Thanks @whatlion. I appreciate the detail. A couple of additional points:

1) your solution only works in iMovie on the Mac, I guess, not iMovie on the IOS device. I still don't have a way to import the Live Photo 3 second video into iMovie directly on the phone or iPad. If anyone else has a solution, let us know!

2) Your solution also works in Final Cut Pro X on the Mac.

3) if you have Final Cut Pro X, you can use Optical Flow to smooth out the lower frame rate, info here.
