Q: Transferring Volumes in Time Machine

I currently have Time Machine backing up two volumes: my boot volume and an external drive.

I'm about to transfer the contents of that external drive from its current physical location to new hardware… larger in size :-)

If I name the new external drive the same as the existing one, will Time Machine continue to back it up?

Or will the internal representations in El Capitan be different so that I have to set TM up specifically to exclude the old drive (which I know I do with 'Exclude' in System Prefs); and to include the new volume - which I;m not sure how to do?

TIA!

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), Clean machine... no haxies; no Microsoft etc

    Hey Mark,

Thanks for using Apple support Communities to post your question. If you are going to use a new External drive for your Time Machine back up. It is always recommended to set it up as a new backup then go ahead and exclude any volumes that you wish from the Time Machine settings. Have a look at the link below to get what you would like accomplished.

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac

This should get you all set up in no time. Have a great day!

Thanks @stuckboss; actually it's the other way around: I want to continue to use the same Volume/Hard Drive on which Time Machine is working now to include a new physical volume to back up; yet give that other backup drive the same name as the other drive I'm retiring…

In fact, I achieved this quite simply - by judicious use of the 'Exclude' table… TM almost did it all for me :-)
