how can i download and copy photos from icloud to an external hard drive

Can I download and copy photos from icloud to an external hard drive? What I am really trying to do is copy my albums from my icloud directly to an ext hd.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

One option would be to move your Photos application Library to the external drive or make a copy of it if your want a backup. Article is for iPhoto, but the procedures are basically the same.
