Q: iPhoto 8.1.2
I am in the process of finally moving out of Snow Leopard -- I hung on for as long as I could due to app compatability issues. I've moved to Lion okay, but am now looking at El Capitan. Unfortunately I never upgraded from iPhoto 8.1.2 -- if I upgrade to El Capitan, will my old iPhoto be able to migrate to Photo (iCloud) ... if I need to upgrade iPhoto first, where can I find an upgrade?

Yes - you will need to download and run the iPHoto library upgrader - Using the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool - Apple Support
and before you upgrade you should be sure your library is clean - Notes on Migrating an iPhoto Library from iPhoto to Photos for Mac
And Photos is a new program not an iPhoto upgrade and there is a learning curve and new work flows - tke time to learn how to use it or you will be frustrated -- here are some differences between the newest version iPhoto and Photos - Photos 1.5 vs iPhoto 9.6.1: Features and Capabilities
this describes how the migration handles your organization and metadata - How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support
