Q: iPod Video 5.5 Generation, Sound From Dock - None From Headphones
Hello,
I've been browsing the forum here among other places trying to figure this somewhat strange issue out and I finally decided to see if someone here has an answer. I recently bought an used iPod Video 5.5 Generation 30GB (A1136, Model#: PA446LL, SN:********V9N) off of craigslist. The iPod seemed to be fully functional cosmetically and hardware wise. Until I attempted to listen to a song through the headphone jack. To my surprise, there was no sound coming through the jack. If I turned the volume all the way up, I could hear a slight static noise (Not music related), so I assumed that the jack is receiving power. I read online that this could be caused by cracked solder joints on the audio decoder or dac, so I tried pinching the right/bottom right corners with no change in the static at all. Thinking that I had just bought a busted iPod, I tried playing that same music through my car's stereo receiver using the usb/dock connection and it worked flawlessly. Slightly confused at this point, I took the thing apart and inspected the headphone jack and ribbon cable, motherboard and audio chips. Everything looked perfectly fine including the headphone jack and cable, there was not bent connections inside and it was clean. I attempted squeezing the chips on the motherboard while playing the music once again with it taken apart and there wasn't even a change in the static (when volume was 100%). I have tried different headphones/earbuds and with all of them, as you are plugging them into the jack you can specifically hear the left channel and then the right receive their power.
I have read only a few instances of this particular issue happening and the response to all of them was to get a replacement headphone jack. I am skeptical of doing this as I can hear that both channels are powered fine, there is just no audio at all. I am asking if anyone who has some expertise on this motherboard (820-1975-A) knows where this problem lies (Dock get flawless audio out but headphone jack has absolutely nothing). I do have the necessary tools to solder and re-flow if needed.
Things I have tried:
- Different Headphones/Earbuds
- Cleaning the headphone jack/re-seating the ribbon cable
- Squeezing most of the integrated chips while music was playing
- The 5 "R's" apple suggests (including restoring w/ mac & windows multiple times).
- Different music formats (ALAC, MP3, WAV (16 bit, 44.1 kHz))
- Hard restarts
- Possible other things that I am forgetting
Things I am NOT willing to do:
- Return to the craigslist seller
- Call Apple/go to an Apple store for a replacement
- Buy a new logic board (I understand the one I have may be impossible to fix)
I greatly appreciate your time and I hope that the heart of this problem can be pinpointed!
