Q: Mac Pro Silver Intel Died and Won't start up Blinks and clicks

I have an old Silver Mac Pro that I use for a hard drive farm/server. Yesterday it suddenly clicked off. It is set to power back up after an outage. So now it does the following;

It clicks, the white light comes on, it clicks, the white light goes back off.

If I unplug it, replug it, then push the button the light comes on with a click and clicks right back off again.

I'm thinking power supply, but would appreciate advice.

Thank you

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)

Hi churdan, have you tried the troubleshooting steps from this Apple Support Topic:

If your Mac won't turn on - Apple Support

If those suggestions don't solve it, take it in to any Apple Store for a free evaluation.

I have tried all those things short of taking to the apple store. Do you know how much they charge for diagnostic on these old computers? probably more than the cost to replace the computer with another the same age.

Apple will run diagnostics on your Mac and give you a free evaluation.

What model Mac Pro is it? I would not fix a 2006-2008 model.

Have opened side cover and look for diagnostic light lit by memory modules and on logic board?

Have you disconnected all accessories except mouse, monitor and mouse? This includes all PCIe cards except graphics card?

    Pull out all HD sleds.

    All cards except graphics card?

Next pull out graphics card and see if you can hear startup chime

If none of the above show life in the Mac then likely power supply or logic board.

Diagnostics are free at an Apple store. However. given the age of the Mac the Genius might not be of much help

The reason I want to fix it is that I have 3 extra hard drives inside it with a job and use it as a 20TB backup server. It still serves a valid purpose, although it is loud and hot. I will try these further steps you mention;"

The reason I question this is that the web site states:

If your Mac still won't start up after you've tried each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar (available in some countries only).

Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

Yes, they state, "diagnostic fees may be charged." However, I haven't heard from one person who was charged.
