Messages Quit bug

Messages v9.2 in OS X El Capitan v10.11.6 - when focus is on the text input field and cmd-q is used to quit, the 'q' keypress will carry through the the next active window. If a text input context is active, a 'q' will be inserted at the current cursor location, in gMail, the Chat search modal will be triggered by the 'q' hotkey.

I'm attempting to exit the messages app. I realize that I can change focus from the text input field before quitting to avoid the buggy behavior, but that's kind of beside the point.

Upon further testing, I've found that a bunch of other OS X built-in apps (e.g. Calendar, Notes, Reminders, etc) all have the same bug, so I suspect it's some bit of underlying OS functionality that's actually misbehaving.
