Aug 12, 2016 1:22 PMby oscara7,Tried two cables and tried both inputs into the monitor. The monitor works fine with the same cable and another computer. Since it only occurs when starting up, I wonder if it is a heat problem and I may have a CPU going out.
Have only used the HDMI output, any known problems with that socket?

Aug 13, 2016 4:55 PMby oscara7,Well, that is interesting. I have probably been resetting the SMC inadvertently a number of times. I have the computer on a power strip which I switch off soon after the machine has shut down. In the event of remembering another task, the power comes back up and the computer is booted up after a short delay (5 sec?). As I read the 5 step instructions, this resets the SMC. Could I be causing the problem by booting up too rapidly?

No, you can't boot too fast.
If problem is easily repeatable then you maybe able to demonstrate the problem to an Apple Genius in an Apple store.

Aug 15, 2016 3:21 PMby oscara7,FYI for anyone having like problems. lllaass was exactly right. I should have installed a temp and fan speed monitor. (I have one in now and highly suggest anyone who has a pet to do the same.)
As a last resort, I opened the back and out popped a dust bunny (cat hairs) from the blower area. Cleaned the area, blower etc. with air and the system works great. 1800 RPM @ 47-51C at #1 CPU.
I assume that the obstruction was large enough that it occasionally did not allow the fan to spin up when starting. At less than 1800 RPM I would guess the computer will not boot up.
