Q: Unable to unmount disk for repair

Hey out there - I hope somebody can help me out with a solution for my problem!

My external HDD (WD MY Passport) deciding to quit playing on the same team earlier today.

Both my macs recognize the drive, but wont let me access it's file directory - when trying to check the drive diskutil tells me it needs repair, and when trying to repair it, diskutil says it's unable to unmount the drive .... >_<

But when accessing the drive through the recovery partition I can do both check and repair and it will just come back saying "everything is ******* A-OK" .... When using the diskutil through the recovery partition I can even access it's file directory and it shows me all the files without any trouble ....

So this is becoming increasingly strange ...

Is there anybody out there that has any idea what to do with this?

Best regards,

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Shut down your Mac. Now start it with the Shift key held down. This will start it into Safe Mode, with all extensions turned off. Safe Mode is slow to start, so give it time, it's checking a bunch of staff. If it works OK in Safe Mode, restart normally. If it works now, you're done.

If the problem returns after restart, you have an extension conflict. Turn off all extensions via System Preferences. To isolate which extension is at fault, turn on one extension at a time, restarting in between, until you find the bad apple.

I was able to access the drive once in Safe mode ! and aldo able to access it after reboot - for a couple of minutes before everything froze -_- the drive contains my entire iTunes library and it was when I tried to open iTunes than things got stuck again .. and my access to the drive also stopped ... I rebooted into Safe mode, got access to the drive again and was able to copy some to another HDD and then connect that drive to my other mac, not in Safe Mode and actually open the files ... Maybe it's the iTunes library file that is corrupted ... ?

Software issues don't usually impact hardware directly, but who knows.

SAVE your files while you can! You could then try rebuilding the iTunes Library, but I would still put my money on an extension conflict, likely related to iTunes. Try disabling all extensions via System Preferences, rebooting, then testing them one at a time.
