Q: How to automatically create groups and add devices?

Hi Everyone,

I'm completely new at this, hopefully, someone can help or guide me in the right direction.

We want to manage our iPads. We have around 300 iPads, and we want to create 12 Group Devices (Grade 1 Class A, Grade 1 Class B, Grade 1 Class C, Grade 2 Class A, Grade 2 Class B, and so on... ) for the different classes. Each grade and class must have certain apps.

So, my question is, what would be the best way of doing this? We want to automate this as much as possible, and I don't want to add each device manually in te device group. Is there a script that can be done to import a CSV file to create groups and add them the devices in them?

Thanks

Marc

I think you need them to enroll first. Once you enrolled them you can manage and push application per classes.

Yes,  I understand that I need to in enroll them to push out/managed the apps. Right now I did 5 iPads, added their serial number manually,  created a group,  and added them to that group... All manually, and all works.

I just don't want to that process for another 870 iPads.  I'm wondering if there is a way to create the placeholder,  create the group and add them to that group... Automatically, by script or any other way.

    Thank again

You can import device placeholders from a spreadsheet list of names and SNs. It's an option that appears when you click the '+' button.

As far as creating groups is concerned, you'll need to use a hack. Try device names with prefixes that allow you to find the group members using the search box, then add the ones found to the corresponding group.

My advice is to avoid fine-grained groups, they're more trouble than they're worth. If year 1 students' iPads have apps they won't need until year 4, does it really matter? They'll either ignore them or, if they're bright, try them. Either way...
