My mac says I am out of memory, but i've cleared almost everything!

I'm trying to download something and it says that i need 2GB of memory. I clicked on the apple and "about this mac". It said i only had 1GB so i started clearing stuff. I got rid of A LOT. I clicked on about this mac again and i got the same response. I googled it and it told me to go to activity monitor. I did, and it said I had something around 260 GB. I am extremely bad with computers and it would be really great if someone could help me out. Thanks!!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hi lwalker, it's not you. They often disagree about disk space.

What is other?

Omni DiskSweeper can show you the precise size and location of all your files. It will inventory your disk starting from the files that take up the most space. It can also give you a more accurate read of disk space than Finder or Storage Tab of About this Mac. If you want you can even delete files from OmniDisk Sweeper. But be careful some of the items may be important to your system.
