Q: PM G5 Quad Core 11,2 kernel panic, freezes

In fall 2005 I purchased this computer from Apple, added 4 GB more ram, and used it for a few years. While under warrantee, I had problems, odd behaviours or kernel panics- and this is where I my memory is a bit hazy- and in early 2007 I was sent a replacement part of some sort from Apple, perhaps the hard drive?

Problems continued on & off for years, and I worked with my Mac guy to try to troubleshoot, but to no avail. Tried usual stuff with peripherals, ram, etc. Finally in spring 2010, I purchased a new (used) processor/cpu, which he installed for me. When that didn't solve things, I managed to get a used MacPro to use, and shoved the G5 under my desk.

Now, I am looking to get rid of it- I was hoping to sell it for parts or whatever, instead of it ending up in landfill somewhere, but if I can try to explain what the issue is, perhaps someone can fix it.

I started it up, it ran fine with a few applications- Word 2008, iTunes, Stickies, etc. I decided to wipe the HD, and put a new fresh system 10.4 on it. But, as soon as it restarted, it had a kernel panic (see attached photo), with the fan on full, and a red light behind the front grill. I tried booting from install disc, running Apple hardware test, but it stopped after a few minutes. Tried resetting SMC, zapped PRAM, tried again to run AHT, and it again stopped- this time I noted that it was 2:48 into the test, during the logic board test. I have nothing plugged into the G5, except monitor (which worked fine with MacPro), keyboard & mouse (ditto). So, I am thinking it may be the logic board, but would like to get a second opinion.

Thanks.

What version of 10.4 was it you installed? Was it original G5 Disc, or what?

What is the 2z691-****-A number on the Disc?l

Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

10.4.2- was original install disc. When I booted from it, and ran disk utility or installed the new system, I didn't have any problems. Something about running the hardware test pushes it over the edge. Or, it intermittently has the panic.

Not sure where you got that number from? Have no idea what it refers to.

As far as battery, when I first booted it up yesterday, it seemed to have right date set, so not sure if that is an issue. Don't have a spare battery lying around, but I was having these issues years ago, when battery was a mere baby...

Om the Date/Time, if it's connected to the Internet & set ro update Autom then it'll be correct before you can check it.

On the HW test, was it the OF or GUI version? I believe the GUI version always crashes on Dual Core G5s.

It was not hooked up to internet, so what I saw is what it remembered.

Not sure how to know- it was on install disk that came with computer. Was like a stand alone program, not command line, so GUI? I don;t know why they would include a program that would crash the computer it came with, but then again, I also can't explain recent versions of iTunes...

OK, not the PRAM Battery then.

I'm not sure which version  od HW test came with it, my G5 Quad didn't come with it, I use AHT 2.5.2 or ASD 2.6.3

The AHT wasn't fully updated for the 2005 models before they were released).

Tried swapping ram, still crashed during testing.  Ran Apple ASD 2.6.3, OF, crashed while in test #4, "Automatically turns on fans & testing in progress..., testing A pump" Red lights came on, #'s 2 and 6.

Restarted, tried running thermal calibration, ran for a minute before it crashed.

Restarted normally, created new user, launched every application & utility, played a DVD, fan sped up, but otherwise, seems fine.
