Q: Can't install OSX!

Hi there,

Earlier today, I accidentally wiped my entire HDD (diskpart clean). That's right: no more MAC side and no recovery partition. I have a Macbook Pro Mid-2009 that was given to me a month ago. I don't have the Mac OSX installer disk.

I tried to install Windows 8 and 10 but both installers get stuck at the Windows Logo. I made a bootable USB of Yosemite OSX (from a friend's Macbook Air). That too stalls. I have tried two different usbs. Right now, my 120GB SSD hdd is configured for Windows. It's empty because the windows installer failed.

I'm at a loss of what to do. What's going on?

Since your Mac is too old to use Internet Recovery, you are going to have to boot from the install DVD for you Mac and reformat the disk drive to HFS+ and GUID partition mapping.

Once you get that system reinstalled you will need to upgrade the operating system from there.

If you do not have a valid backup, all of your data will be lost by the reformat.

I'm using the install USB disk, and that's not working. Why would the install DVD work whilst the usb fails? At any rate, I suppose I am at liberty to create an install DVD? I don't know where to buy one...

My hdd is empty right now so data loss is not an issue. Is there a software out there that would allow me to reform the disk drive to Mac's liking w/o the need of procuring an install DVD?

    Thank you for replying.

The install USB is most likely not compatible with that Mac.

The install DVD that came with the Mac is.

So it should work after you reformat the disk drive back to the format required by Apple.

Since you need to boot the Mac to do the format, you need the install DVD to do that.

It seems that your drive has a corrupted sector that is stopping the computer from writing information on the drive sector. You should try to take the HDD out of the mac and put it into a working machine. From hear you should wipe the drive. If you do not have another machine try to install a full version of mac OSX on a usb drive from your friends mac and boot off of that. After you boot off of that you can format the drive from OSX. FINALLY if this does not work you may have a problem with your CPU and the chache or the RAM in your computer is faulty. Hope I could help GLHF

I don't have access to the original install DVD. I can make one though.

I mean that you need to boot into your friends recovery partition and then you need to install mac OSX on a drive formatted as Journal in the Apple Bootable Format. Then this drive will be bootable and you can then format your original drive from here. Sometimes windows install corrupts the drive and it is rendered useless without a very clean format. I am very sorry that this happened. A similar problem has happened to my friend.

Hey, thanks. My thoughts exactly. Question is, how do I format my original drive? I tried creating a bootable install disc of Yosemite via DiskMaker. I also tried to create a bootable DiskWarrior USB. Fail. Fail. Fail. Why won't my bootable USBs work? They stall. Any ideas?

i'm unconvinced this would solve my problem though...if the usb won't load why would the dvd?

Ok this will work! Access your friends computer with the working Mac Osx. hold Command + R on boot up. Go into disk utility and find the USB drive format it as a Journaled bootable partition. Then go into the icon that says install mac + version. Do this and be sure to select the USB drive. This will make it bootable. P.S I have done this before. Then you must take that drive out after it has installed and put it into your broken machine. Press Option at startup and hold it down. You then must select the usb drive. Your mac will boot slowly because of the USB speeds and the fact that the

Lake Port chipset or the Core 2 Duo does not support USB 3.0. Upon boot up you will need to go through all of the apple steps to set up your mac. When you get into the os open up disk utility and find the internal hdd that is broken. first do a first aid on the hdd and then format it. Format the drive multiple times (two is good enough) to make sure that it worked. Then shut off your mac and enter Recovery mode once again. This time when you go through the mac osx install you must select the hdd and it should install for you! GLHF! P.S this problem has happened to me countless times and this has worked for me every time.

I was able to boot into diskwarrior and use disk utility to reformat the HDD into a single partition as journal. Aaand, guess what? NOW it booted from the Installer USB I'm on my way to installing Yosemite. *crosses fingers* Thank you!
