Q: OSX recovery without Disc for upgrade to SSD drive

I've just purchased a new Macbook pro 2012 model and wanted to upgrade the hdd to SSD but did not get a recovery disc, i noticed you can download the OSX over the internet now when going into the recovery menu. does this still work without the original hard drive being installed and now replaced with a new SSD drive?

If you boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys, it will connect your MBP to the Apple servers and you can install the original OSX that the MBP came with.  Note that you have to format the SSD prior installing the OSX to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with Disk Utility.

Note that you can also clone your current HDD to the SSD using a third party application such as Carbon Copy Cloner.  The best way to do it is to connect the SSD to the MBP via USB.  Run the clone application, test the SSD externally to make certain it boots the MBP and the perform the physical swap.  (Prior to cloning, the SSD still has to be formatted via Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

    Ciao.
